Giving Coachella Valley Kids the Stability They Need to Succeed
The start of a new school year can bring a lot of excitement for kids. New teachers, new classmates, new subjects, and plenty of things to look forward to. But for families, getting ready for school can also come with new challenges and a long list of things to think about. Backpacks need to be packed, clothes need to be laid out, and pickup/dropoff planned out; most importantly, kids need to feel ready to learn.
At the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, we know that being prepared for school goes beyond having a new backpack. For families experiencing difficult circumstances, having access to basic necessities like food, clothing, and a safe place to sleep can make it much easier for children to focus on school and succeed.
Why Preparation Matters for Kids
Kids have a lot to think about during the school day. They are learning new things, making friends, and adjusting to new routines. When their basic needs are being met, they have more room to focus on all of that. Something as simple as having breakfast before school can make a difference. Having clean clothes and the supplies needed for class can help a child feel confident. Knowing they have a safe place to sleep at night can provide the stability they need to come to school ready to learn. Preparation does not have to be complicated. Creating a consistent bedtime, getting clothes ready the night before, organizing a backpack, and setting aside time for homework can all help children develop routines that make school days easier.
Helping Families Prepare Through the Women’s and Children’s Shelter
For families experiencing homelessness, establishing those routines can be much more difficult. That is one reason our Women’s and Children’s Shelter is such an important part of the work we do at CVRM. Our shelter provides mothers and children with a safe and supportive place to stay while they work toward greater stability. Having a secure environment gives families the opportunity to focus on the things that matter, including their children’s education. For a child, knowing where they will sleep, having access to meals, and being surrounded by supportive adults can provide a sense of consistency during a time when many other things may feel uncertain. That stability can follow them into the classroom.
Food Support Helps Kids Start the Day Ready
Being prepared for school also means having enough food at home. Our Food Box Distribution Program helps provide groceries and essential food items to individuals and families throughout the Coachella Valley who are facing food insecurity. For parents, having additional food at home can make it easier to plan meals, prepare lunches, and make sure their children have something to eat before heading off to school. A well-fed child is better positioned to focus on lessons, participate in activities, and make the most of their school day. For families already trying to stretch a limited budget, food assistance can also free up resources for other school-related or emergency expenses.
Helping Coachella Valley Kids Start the School Year Prepared
For many families, back-to-school shopping can add extra pressure to an already tight budget. Over the last few weeks, we were proud to see our community come together for our annual Backpack & School Supply Drive. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters and community partners, we were able to fill and distribute more than 1,600 backpacks to local children, to help them start the new school year feeling prepared and confident. Events like these are a reminder that supporting local children takes a community.
When businesses, organizations, volunteers, and neighbors come together, we can make a meaningful difference for Coachella Valley families. At CVRM, we are proud to support children and families in many different ways, and this annual backpack drive is just one more opportunity to help local kids begin the school year with confidence and a little extra support.
