A Safe Place During Extreme Heat: CVRM Cooling Center
Summer in the desert can be intense, and in the Coachella Valley, triple-digit temperatures can arrive fast. For many people, staying cool means turning on the air conditioning, grabbing a cold drink of water, and staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day. But for individuals experiencing homelessness or those without reliable access to cooling, extreme heat can quickly become dangerous. That’s why the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission continues to provide a safe and welcoming Cooling and Warming Center for Coachella Valley unhoused community members who need relief from the heat. Summer Can Quickly Become Dangerous in The Coachella Valley
At CVRM, we know how serious summer temperatures can be in the desert. Heat exhaustion and dehydration can happen quickly, especially for those spending long hours outdoors. Our emergency cooling services are here to help provide a safer environment during the hottest times of the year. Located on our Indio campus, our Cooling & Warming Center gives guests a place to come in, cool down, rest, and access basic essentials throughout the day. The center is open during the hottest months, from June 1st through September 1st. For many people, having a dependable place to escape the heat can make a major difference during the summer months.
More Than Just Air Conditioning
Our Coachella Valley cooling center is about more than simply getting out of the sun. When guests visit the cooling center, they can also access daily essentials and support services that help them stay healthy and cared for during extreme weather. This includes showers, meals, clothing, and connections to additional shelter and recovery resources available at the Mission. Sometimes people just need a place to sit down, cool off, and catch their breath. Other times, they may need food, clean clothing, or someone to point them toward longer-term support. We aim to provide all of that in a welcoming environment where people are treated with dignity and compassion. For individuals facing homelessness in the Coachella Valley, having access to emergency cooling services can be critical during periods of dangerous heat.
Supporting the Coachella Valley During Summer
Every summer, temperatures across the valley continue to rise, and heat advisories become more common. While many residents can stay indoors, vulnerable members of the community often face the harshest conditions directly. That’s why accessible resources like the cooling center at CVRM matter so much. We want people to know they have somewhere they can go during the day to cool down safely. No one should feel like they have to face dangerous temperatures alone. Whether someone is living unsheltered, struggling financially, or simply in need of relief from the heat, our doors are open. Our mission has always been centered around helping people meet immediate needs while also connecting them with longer-term support. Sometimes that starts with a hot meal. Sometimes it starts with shelter. And during the summer, it may simply begin with a cool place to rest for a few hours.
A Simple Way We Can Help
At the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, we provide daily essentials and support services to those facing homelessness and hunger throughout the community. Along with meals, shelter, food assistance, and recovery programs, our Cooling & Warming Center is one more way we help protect vulnerable individuals during extreme weather conditions. The reality is simple: summer heat in the desert can be dangerous, and access to emergency cooling services can save lives.
We remain committed to providing a safe space where people can cool down, access care, and feel supported during the hottest months of the year. If you would like to support this mission, we encourage you to volunteer your time or make a donation to help us continue serving those in need throughout the Coachella Valley. And if you or someone you know needs relief from the heat this summer, our Coachella Valley cooling center is here to help.
